Distressed-home prices in Nevada soar as inventory shrinks – VEGAS INC

With investors buying houses and hacking down the inventory, the price of distressed homes is rising faster in Nevada than in any other state, a new report shows.Nevada homes that were bank-owned or headed toward foreclosure sold for an average $144,182 in the three months ending March 31, up 22.71 percent from a year earlier, according to Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac.Kansas was a close second to Nevada, with the price rising 22.57 percent this past year to $143,626. Nationally, such homes sold for an average $167,095 last quarter, up 3 percent from a year earlier.Nevada’s price increase comes amid shrinking availability and sales volume. A total of 4,512 distressed homes — meaning they had been seized by lenders, scheduled for auction or slapped with a notice of default — were sold statewide last quarter, down 63 percent from a year earlier.

Summerlin’s surge in land sales signals a healthier Las Vegas housing market – VEGAS INC

Summerlin land sales almost quadrupled last quarter from a year before, a sign of homebuilders’ increased appetite in Las Vegas.

The 22,500-acre master-planned community, which runs along the western rim of the valley, had $28.2 million of residential land sales in the quarter ending March 31, up from $7.1 million a year earlier, according to a financial report Thursday from developer Howard Hughes Corp.

Last quarter’s revenue nearly matched the amount generated by all of last year’s Summerlin land sales, $31 million.

The Hughes corporation has three other master-planned communities — two in Texas and one in Maryland. However, CEO David Weinreb only discussed Summerlin in his comments in Thursday’s quarterly earnings report, saying he was “particularly pleased that the Las Vegas housing market is showing such strong improvement.”

Company officials sold 99 acres of residential land in Summerlin last quarter, up from 25 acres a year earlier. Over that period, the price per acre rose to $285,000 from $282,000.

Gaming industry sees biggest revenue gains since recession – VEGAS INC

The U.S. casino industry captured $37.3 billion in gaming revenues in 2012, a 4.8 percent increase from 2011.

That growth rate is largest since the recession swept through the industry in 2008, according to an annual report released today by the American Gaming Association.

The AGA’s “State of the States” survey — a national snapshot of the casino industry based on economic data and public opinion — targets 22 states with commercial casinos and racetracks.

Frank J. Fahrenkopf, the AGA’s president and CEO, said this year’s data is a major bright spot in an industry marred by a recession that hemorrhaged workers and construction projects through the recession.
